ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Washington Federal and the University of New Mexico (UNM) are partnering to support local charity Albuquerque Heading Home in their effort to fight homelessness. Beginning November 1, 2014 Washington Federal will contribute $10 to Albuquerque Heading Home for every three-point basket made by the UNM’s Lobos men’s and women’s basketball teams. This partnership and contribution will continue throughout the 2014-2015 basketball season.

“Albuquerque Heading Home is extremely proud to add Washington Federal to our list of community partners through the ‘Shoot 3 Score $10’ partnership. Our success in housing nearly 450 of our city’s most chronically homeless and medically vulnerable residents is largely due to city-wide collaboration. Through our partner agencies in the non-profit, government and private sectors, we have effectively reduced the number of homeless on our streets while raising awareness about the often complicated issues surrounding this problem. With continued support of partners, like Washington Federal, willing to contribute to make a safer, healthier and better community for all, we can make experiences of homelessness in Albuquerque rare, short-lived and non recurring,” said Megan McCormick, Heading Home’s Director of Development.

“Lobo Sports Properties is proud and excited to begin a partnership with Washington Federal. This collaborative effort will bring excitement into The Pit whenever the Lobos make a three-point basket, knowing those points also will directly benefit the Albuquerque community and our combined efforts to fight homelessness with Albuquerque Heading Home,” said Kyle James, Lobo Sports Properties General Manager.NewMexico_property logo image

Bill Synnamon, Washington Federal’s New Mexico Regional President adds, “We appreciate the importance of healthy, thriving local communities to the success of our business. This partnership reinforces Washington Federal’s commitment to be ‘invested here’ not only in Albuquerque but throughout the state of New Mexico.”

Washington Federal, UNM and Albuquerque Heading Home launched the new partnership with a kick-off event on Friday, November 21 at Washington Federal’s Osuna branch in Albuquerque. The event included comments by representatives of all three organizations, the Lobos mascot and local community members. Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry was also in attendance and passed along his encouragement for the new partnership.
