After the first full cycle of collegiate athletics, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, along with Indiana’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, awarded the Indiana National Guard Governor’s Cup to recognize the winner of the intercollegiate athletic rivalry between Indiana and Purdue Universities.
Purdue University was the overall athletically superior school for the preceding athletic season. With a final score of 12 to 8, Purdue made a stronger showing in the 21 matchups in 14 different sports between the schools. Morgan Burke, Purdue Vice President-Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, accepted the Governor’s Cup, sponsored by the Indiana National Guard, during a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014. Learfield Sports represents the athletic multimedia rights and sponsorship for both Purdue and Indiana through its Purdue Sports Properties and IU Sports Properties entities respectively.
“The values connect to what the Indiana National Guard does,” said Burke. “We hope all the students will recognize that the National Guard serves a really, really special purpose. We hope the co-branding of three great organizations helps everybody.” 
Pence said it was a privilege to be able to present Purdue with the first, coveted, Governor’s Cup.
“I congratulate you and our good friends at Indiana University, two great and outstanding programs. And here’s to great competition,” said Pence, as he handed the trophy to Burke.
Scott Dolson, Indiana University Deputy Athletic Director, said IU has high expectations for the upcoming athletic season.
“We want to get the cup back,” said Dolson. “It’s a really big deal. We put the Crimson and Gold National Guard update on the big screen and that’s a big deal for our fans to see where we stand.”
